Playing for Keeps

Last night, I received a phone call from a woman who identified hereself as working for a polling organization. In a friendly, Canadian-sounding dialect, she told me that I was selected at random to answer some questions about local politicians to gauge voter mood in my district.

After being queried about my party affiliation and my likelihood to vote in the upcoming primaries, I was asked to rate my familiarity and impressions of various politicans including Weinberg, Johnson, Wildes, Zisa, Rothman and Corzine as well as my impressions of the Bergen Democratic Organization.

I was then asked, "If the election was held today for State Senate and Assembly, was I likely to vote for Weinberg, Huttle and Johnson or the team endorsed by the Bergen Democratic Organization?"

I responded that I intend to support Weinberg, Huttle and Johnson.

The caller then read a long and somewhat rambling statement about the glowing accomplishments of Michael Wildes. While I glazed over for most of it, my impression is that it went one step short of saying that he saves kittens from trees and has discovered a cure for dementia. I was then asked, whether this information had influenced my opinion of and likelihood to vote for him.

I was beginning to get suspicious that I was victim of a push polling effort...

She then read a series of statements about Loretta Weinberg that went something like this (paraphrased):

"What if I told you that Loretta Weinberg gave a job to a lawyer who had done pro bono work for her, would that influence my likelihood to vote for her?"

"...and how about if I told you that Loretta Weinberg is just another a tax and spend liberal...?"

"...and how about that she failed to bring the homeland security bacon home to the district...?"

"...and what if I told you that Loretta Weinberg favored civil unions between men and box turtles...?"

When the caller began the same line of questioning about Valerie Huttle, I cut her off. I told her that attempts by the Bergen Democratic Organization to influence my vote were not going to work and that they were actually having the reverse effect, strengthening my resolve to work harder to elect Weinberg, Huttle and Johnson.

Do you have caller ID? I enjoy writing those numbers down for future reference, especially when the person calling is not terribly forthcoming about the motive behind the call. Glad to know that the Bergen County machine is hard at work cranking out the propaganda. Ugh.

My phone says: 800-690-6970

Does anyone have any idea how to identify unlisted callers without paying a fee?

Call the cops and register a complaint. They can trace the number.

Much as I have never been a fan of Loretta Weinberg, I have always liked Valerie Huttle and Gordon Johnson -- and I can't stand Ferriero or anyone associated with his "boss" tactics. This effort is too early and will backfire on him, I predict.

Loretta Weinberg has done more harm to the Township of Teaneck than any person now living other than Frank Hall. She is an enemy of every aspect of sound planning. She and her followers have bled us dry by stopping virtually all development in Town during the long years when they ran the Town government. This has led to our unspeakably high property taxes.

Her whole career bespeaks an unquentionable thirst for public office, which she has held without distinction and without regard for anything other her own betterment. She has to go.

Let's give Wildes credit this week. His Pro Bono effort got the poor man whose family was wiped out in the Bronx fire the opportunity to bury them in Africa and still get back into the US.

Swurgle,

Here's who I think called you: http://www.dimarkresearch.com/home.htm

They're in Winnipeg, so the Canadian accent of the caller makes sense.

OK, so the lady was right, Wildes does walk on water. Didn't he just run an aggressive re-election campaign for Mayor of Englewood? Wouldn't he be short-changing the good people of Englewood and looking like a political opportunist if he turns around three months after the election and runs for some other office?

Norma - Good detective work! The next job is to find out who's paying them.

Swurgle -

He already looks like a political opportunist - check out his website:

Of course, he probably didn't realize that Senator Lautenberg is running for re-election, and that there will be no open seat next year.

And let's not forget that he's thrown his lot in with Ferreiro and the Bergen County Democratic operation, which does not recommend him to this particular registered Democrat.

This is from the website "The Inside Edge - Politics NJ"

"Unless the Bergen County Democratic Civil War ends before spring, look for a massive amount of money to be spent in the 37th district primary. County Chairman Joseph Ferriero has privately pledged to spend considerable funds to oust three incumbent legislators running off the line in June, and his Senate candidate, uber-ambitious Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes, is a fairly amazing fundraiser in his own right. He raised nearly $600k for his mayoral re-election bid (with nearly $200k remaining), and has nearly $500k cash-on-hand in a federal campaign account he formed just in case the ninth district House seat opens up.

Ken Zisa, a former Assemblyman who will run with Wildes on Ferriero's ticket, has more than $100k in his account.

Incumbent State Senator Loretta Weinberg has about $150k in her warchest. Her running mates have modest amounts of cash-on-hand: Assemblyman Gordon Johnson has about $24k, while Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri-Huttle has $18k."

It would appear by the phone call that Swurgle got that Ferriero is already spending some of that money he promised.

We are due for more change in these parts of the county. It can only get better, people can not afford to live here any more. Maybe with change that will reverse.

Let's see, Ferreiero and the Bergen County Dems, of which Wildes is one, spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on this election. If elected, they funnel many county and local jobs to repay all those donors (known succintly as pay-to-play). This saves us taxpayers money how?

With that's the case, why are taxes so high in Englewood where development has increased the population by 10%? Development costs tax money, buddy.

Now it is the library that is crumbling. Tear the Municipal Dump down and re-build a complex with parking, shops and municipal services.

Sky King- That's the best idea yet!!!

Do you think that Weinberg has not participated in doing robocalls? You bet she has. Boot her out we need new blood!
