Bagels and Boodle

Join Elie Y. Katz for a Complimentary Breakfast with
Chairman of the Bergen County Freeholders
Tomas J. Padilla

Monday June 4, 2007 Poppy’s Bagels 204 West Englewood Avenue Teaneck, NJ 7:15-8:45am

Teaneck residents pay over $ 9,000,000 in taxes to Bergen County. Recently, Chairman Padilla, working together with Councilman Rudolph, was instrumental in bringing Teaneck $ 200,000 for a handicap accessible playground.

If we pay over $9 million a year in taxes to Bergen County, I would be hard pressed to call the breakfast "complimentary."

Does that mean the County paid for the bagels?

I'm always troubled by this attitude - we pay $9 million and what do we get? I assume that we get our county courts, our county hospital, our county roads, parks - the services that should be provided at the county level. Should the county be giving Teaneck $200,000 for this park, or should this facility be built on county parkland, for all county residents? Did each municipality have an equal opportunity to receive these funds, or is this a result of the "close relationship" between certain Teaneck councilmembers and the BCDO?

Good questions!!!

I just voted in the Democratic primary and I plum forgot to look to see who the regular Bergen County Democratic Organization candidates for freeholder nomination were. I assume Mr. Padilla was one of them and that's why Mayor Katz was hosting him at Poppy's?? I also assume that if the host didn't pay for the bagels, the campaign of Mr. Padilla did.

Very strange ballot. Weinberg, Huttle, and Johnson -- the top of the "Real Democrats" ticket -- were in column 2 along with the regular Bergen County Democratic Committee candidates for Sheriff and freeholder. The other "Real Democrats" were orphaned on column 1 with three blank lines above them.

I wonder how these "lower level" candidates on the "Real Democrats" "slate" feel about that.

By the way, I voted for them, as well as for the two "Real Democrats" for Assembly. Thanks to the rapprochement between Weinberg and Ferriero, I was not forced to break my perfect record with respect to the very top of the ticket.
