Just wait for this to hit the fan...
Some Teaneck voters unable to vote at 7 a.m.
Tuesday, April 21, 2009
NorthJersey.com
A handful of voters in Teaneck were unable to cast votes at 7 a.m. at two polling places because the doors were still locked.
Peter Incardone Jr., the chairman of the county elections board, confirmed that voters who arrived at 7 a.m. – the hour that polls were supposed to open – at Benjamin Franklin Middle School and Temple Emeth found that the buildings were still closed.
“When our board workers got there at 6:15 in the morning, they could not get into the building,” Incardone said. “Several voters were there at 7 o’clock to vote, and they were denied their right to vote.”
Incardone said the sites were open sometime after 7 a.m. and that his office had received three or four complaints.
A school custodian is supposed to open the doors at the school, while the temple is expected to make sure its doors are open. Incardone said his office would be delivering “strongly-worded” letters to both sites on Wednesday.
Resident Aaron Friedman said he showed up at 7 a.m. at Benjamin Franklin to vote. He said there were no signs indicating that voting would be taking place there, and the doors to the normal polling room were locked.
He had to leave for work before anyone arrived to open the doors and will not be returning home before the polls close at 9 p.m.
“I didn’t get my chance to vote,” he said. “Why weren’t there people there?”

An Orthodox Jew conspiracy I'm sure

The budget goes down, sweet!

Does anyone know...

1. Has this ever happened in Teaneck before?

2. What happens next?

Anonymous said...

Yes it has.
It goes to the Council.

I have to assume all of Burack's 1,900 supporters would have voted for other like-minded candidates, had there been any on the ballot.
Next year will be even more interesting.

Note that the two locations that did not open on time are both in the West Englewood area. Perhaps it is a conspiracy.
If I was Rose, losing by 60 votes with two polling places where he was likely the second choice among the voters, I would raise quite a stink.

Here's my prediction.

The final budget that is eventually passed by the State BOE will be at MOST 500K less than the budget that was just turned down.

All that fighting, all that wasted energy, all that angst - and in the end, virtually nothing will change.

Yep, Rightfield, you said it. If voters had had a second Burack-type candidate to support, they both would have been elected. Start looking to the next election cycle...

Based on Tom's chart, Rose ran second (by large margins) at both Temple Emeth and BFMS.
How many Rose voters showed up in the morning and left when the polling places were closed? He might very well have finished in third place!
The orthodox have been disenfranchised! It IS a conspiracy!

OOR-

One of the polling places, a SYNAGOGUE, was not open at 7am. There is no conspiracy except in your own head!

OOR is right. Let's have a new election.

Karin - While it may be hard for you to comprehend, but Jews are the biggest anti-Semites of all.

I look forward to the discussions about to pare the budget. Let's work together folks. This isn't a zero sum game. We all rise of fall together. Deterioration of conditions in the high school make more it more likely that random gunshots will be fired at homes in West Englewood (as happened last week)... It's in all of our interests that we strive to improve the quality of our public schools whether we use them or not.

I may not agree with everything you say, but I have always admired the tone you set for this blog (plus/minus a few failed attempts at humor) and your efforts in running this blog.

Save the school budget or bullets will come raining down on Teaneck. Come on, give me a break. I can't believe you believe that is true. Your post is just not worthy of you.

Let's have a sense of perspective here. On a per student basis, we are among the top 1-3% best funded in districts in the State (and when you say you are the best funded school district in New Jersey you are saying a lot because we are among the national leaders - if not the national leader - in that category). Even if we were to cut the budget 10% - which will not happen and I am not advocating - we would still likely be within the top 25% of districts in terms of spending.

We have a long way to go before our district can fairly be termed underfunded and a contributor to the deterioration of the fabric of society.

To be very blunt, this issue is way too important to students and struggling taxpayers to be subjected to scare tactics (on both sides of the debate) like the you made in your last post.

The difference between last year's budget passage and this year's failure is a massive depression in the industries (finance/law) employing Teaneck citizens in the interval.

Side Note:

In the string ""Why I am voting "no with an explanation" on the School Budget" some questioned the existance of studies indicating the lack of correlation between teacher's advanced degrees and student achievement. Since people may not go back to that thread, for the curious, I have posted some relevant links on that thread.

Enjoy the vacation, although given the alternatives these days, busy at work ain't so bad.

Anon2008 - you're right about the tone of my last comment and I apologize for that. I've been too busy at work lately and have not had the time to thoroughly consider what I say before I say it. It would probably be better if I refrained from commenting until I have more time to pre-edit what I say. I'll be away on vacation week and with any luck you people won't hear a peep out of me.
