A Thought

Here's an idea: Now that this blog has a steady stream of readers, why don't we allow Adsense to put some ads on the top or side bar, with 100% of the proceeds donated to some townwide charitable cause?

I have no idea how much money could be generated, but it might be a minor way to give back to local people in need.

I'd like to hear from folks about whether we should try this. We'd have to figure out who to give the money to. Suggestions are appreciated.

I always assumed you charged for the "Teaneck based businesses" links on the left side of the blog.

Why don't you use ads to pay for the cost of having the domain?

I thought of linking my adsense account as soon as I was made a admin, lol. Problem is that I HATE advertisements with a passion.

I think it can work though as long as the money went to a charitable cause. I'd suggest having an open thread simply for businesses or charities that people think are worthwhile causes and then a poll to see which of the top four people like the best.

Great Idea what about one of the numerous children's charities?
This is one that our family does each year...I was really surprised to see that not many, if any Teaneck Schools/classrooms are on here...

Maybe barbara could rite another book--Take Back My VOTE-- and donate the proceeds to the charity to help kick it off.

don't sweat this. based on our experience with google ads on our blog, you won't be getting rich. you could give any proceeds to tvac for instance

Bupkis is slightly better than nothing, although I also hate ads with a passion.

But if we did it, TVAC would be a terrific recipient.

Swiggle said...

I'd support TVAC with our ads.

I would prefer not to see ads.

I too would support TVAC.Nobody likes ads lets face it but for a good cause, Tom, come on now, learn to play with the other children!

Teaneck Community Scholarship Fund, Teaneck Festival of the Arts, TOPS (Teaneck Organization for Public Schools, our non-profit education foundation), Teaneck Junior Soccer League and TVAC would be my choices.

Great idea. I'm all for capitalism in Teaneck. If you get very little, its better than nothing.

As much as I hate to see ads defiling the pristine content of this sacred blog, one in which only the highest forms of discourse are accepted, we ought to take advantage of the opportunity to help a worthy cause here in Teaneck by allowing a narrow strip of ads to appear as we read and respond to blog posts.

I agree with the many others who have suggested that the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps -- which serves all of Teaneck at no charge and so thoroughly exemplifies the volunteer spirit that we need to harness -- should be the recipient of any funds raised.

Maybe you can avoid ads by having OORF give a dollar for every snarky comment. What a windfall for charity!!!

How about ads for Bergen Philharmonic?

Anonymous said...

I don't think you are going to make enough money to make it worth messing up your site. How about adding a PayPal "Donate" button instead?

Anonymous said...

Oh Christ, not ads!

Is there any way we can restrict ads to anonymous posters?

I think we should start charging per word posted.

Can i plug my house for sale for a $5 contribution to Teaneck?

Yoni,

Only if Tom Abbott doesn't find the post offensive.

It will help if you don't live in his neighborhood and/or don't try to sell it to Orthodox Jews.

esther said...

Why does every thread eventually spiral into paranoia? Perhaps it's because our drinking water is sourced from the Suez canal.

On an entirely different but perhaps related note for those who are paranoid: I'd like to refresh the links at the side to local businesses and organizations. Please suggest some links to include.

Are there any prayer groups out there that need space?

Karin said...

I am sure there is a prayer group out there that needs a meeting space :-)
Good luck with the house selling/moving Yoni

GUSSEN FOR MAYOR!!

Anonymous said...

How about we give it to the laid off township employees?

Anonymous said...

Wait, is Teaneck having a mayoral election?

Anonymous said...

GUSSEN FOR MAYOR??

Can anyone name anything Gussen has done for Teaneck other than his dog park?

Anonymous said...

If you attended the council meetings, you wouldn't have to ask.

Anonymous said...

BILL BRENNAN FOR MANAGER

Anonymous said...

What has Gussen done?

He voted against a raise to the Municipal Prosecutor Deborah Veach (why the hell would anyone give a lawyer a raise?)

Anonymous said...

Yoni, if you want to add Vera & Nechama you should add all the real estate brokers in town. Or at least the honest and fair ones unlike V&N...

esther said...

Newsflash: Teaneck doesn't have mayoral elections.

Esther,
It's time to start the festooning. I'll gather up some toilet paper!

esther said...

Yoni - Is this a hint that we need a new thread?

Anonymous said...

or a new hobby?

Yoni said...

I was referring to your threat (on the main page) about what we will do when there are malicious anonymous bloggers.

Swiggle said...

Swigle for Pig Catcher.Doesn't sound kosher!

And as the esteemed Barbara Ley has mentioned time and time again -- PLEASE spell my name right. It's S-W-I-G-G-L-E!

esther said...

Yoni - I notice that there's a natural progression threads on this blog:

First the thoughtful people have their say,

then, when the topic is thoroughly exhausted, like jackels to a rotting carcass, the anonymous come out to feast. These are the johnny one-notes who are are single-mindedly obsessed with a single issue or with slagging a particular councilperson or a blogger or promoting their pet candidate for higher office. These are also the folks who can't write nor spell and/or or don't realize that the caps lock is depressed.

Yeah, these are precisely the folks whose bushes ought to be festooned with toilet paper. Let's make a party of it and hit them all in one fell swoop.

Esther,

That may be how tame topics go, but more inflammatory statements are still subject to Godwin's Law.
